Well this week was interesting for sure. We started out with Crime Victims Compensation and Mental Health. I doubt I need to explain what those are about. But then we had our first taste of DT (Defensive Tactics) and it was not the slightest bit fun. We spent the second half of the day getting beat down by the Chief of Police from Winterville. This guy is 5′6″ and 146lbs. He was twice Mr Georgia though and was easily dropping 300+ pound guys in our class. Not a single one of us did not bleed and we were all bruised and tired by the end of it. Then to top it all off we had to run a mile at full speed through the woods. I wasn’t sure if the exhaustion would get me before I would trip on the underbrush and break my ankle. I literally was coughing up mucous until 8:30pm that night. I don’t know why, all I know is it started the moment the run ended as I bent over trying to catch my breath for the next 15 minutes. It continued on throughout the night, to the point that my voice was hoarse and people asked me if I had a cold. The run really tore me up. Call me all the names you want, I willingly admit I am out of shape and 30 years old. But out of the entire class, I was second across the finish line, so put that in your pipe and smoke it :)
We also studied Crimes in Progress, Crime Prevention, Cultural Diversity, and Searching without a Warrant. Nothing much to say about those topics. But the big topic of this week was GCIC. This basically covers all the rules and regulations concerning the information of others such as their criminal record, registration information for their vehicles, driving history, etc. Basically everything we’d see when we run you through the computers. Turns out this is one of the most strictly governed parts of police work. The fines for looking up someone’s information without a legal and valid reason to do so are hefty enough that they make most felony sentences seem weak. And to top it all off, we were tested on the information that same day (meaning no time to study). And to top it all off, you could only miss one question. Any more than that, and you fail. And a handful of our class did. Luckily I passed it.

We had another session of DT on Thursday. Turns out we have it from now on, every Tuesday and Thursday, and I am not looking forward to it. We took our weekly test on Friday and I scored a 94% on it. Quite happy with that score, and for the first time ever none of our classmates failed! Very excited about it. After the test we went over the basics of firearms safety to prepare us for range week, next week.
